What: The layered, historical and busy capital of Bulgaria.
Where: Western Bulgaria.
Top Notch: layered and diverse history, national monuments and churches, walking tour, cafe and bar culture, shopping.
Currency: Bulgarian lev (not easy to exchange back!).
Snapshot: Far south in the heart of Eastern Europe, Sofia is intoxicating and intricately layered. The masses of history – from Roman ruins to Ottoman monuments to the Communism Headquarters – are widely visible, whilst ‘new generation’, post-communist architecture and a thriving bar and shopping culture makes Sofia surprisingly modern.
